The Art of Black and White in Fitness Portraits

A winter project in Black and White

This winter I gave myself a project to learn more about and create black and white fitness images. Black and white is very seldom seen nowadays. But if find when you take away the color something magical happens. Either good or bad depends on the image. So my assignment was to create gritty, contrasty images with rim and overhead lighting. They had to show off the human form of an athlete has some strength training behind them. My first model Kimberly Brown is a fitness champion and coach who quite simply knocked it out of the park with her definition and strength while maintaining her femininity.

Next up is Shaquille.  He is a former football player that works out at the gym I go to Quest Fitness.  Shaquille is a perfect gentleman and has worked hard to achieve and maintain such a high level of fitness.  His size and definition under the lights is really impressive.

Number three is Travis, another person who trains at Quest.  Travis was amazing, a quiet and focused individual who is a finish carpenter. He works long hours on the job and then hits the gym.  With him I was more intrigued by his persona than his amazingly sculped body and size.  All of his clothes are black maybe with some grey once in while.  His look really worked with the black and white process.

Finally Zach, this kid first modeled for me as spider kid, then a football player and now as a fitness model.  He is a very mature young man with a kindness and respect for humanity.  His motivation to is not to have a big bench press number or to be supersized it, is to be the best he can be.  As a fitness professional my self, I found this to be a great reason to work out

This Black and White project was very enjoyable and gave me a chance to play with some new equipment and try new things with light, including modifiers, stands and light patterns.  However, for me it always comes down to working with people to give them a chance to see how amazing they are through my lens.
