Golden Hour Magic in Cape Porpoise: A 55th Anniversary Family Portrait

There’s something incredibly special about photographing families who have come together to celebrate a milestone.  And this Family Portrait session in Cape Porpoise, Maine, was no exception. I had the absolute honor of capturing a beautiful evening in celebrating 55th years of marriage , surrounded by their two daughters, sons-in-law, and four wonderful grandchildren.

The session took place at a charming Airbnb perched right on the water, offering stunning views of Cape Porpoise Bay. Despite the day starting off grey and rainy, in classic Maine fashion, the skies cleared just in time. By the evening, we were gifted with the kind of sunset photographers dream about amazing sparkling, light reflecting off the water, with just enough clouds to make the sky glow.

We photographed  in the backyard, which felt like it was made for moments like these. The dock became a natural gathering spot for the whole family. Indeed, it made for some of my favorite Family portraits of the evening. The setting was serene, with gentle ripples on the bay and warm tones bathing everything in light.

The grandchildren—three girls and one boy—brought so much energy and joy to the session. Two of the granddaughters took turns playing on a rope swing hanging from a tree, and I captured a few sweet, candid moments that perfectly showed the carefree spirit of childhood. Watching the grandparents laugh with their grandkids and pose proudly during portraits was a beautiful reminder of the legacy they’ve built together.

Family sessions like this are what I love most. They tell stories with  smiles and embraces.  Jokes and ribbing were the norm and fleeting moments turned into lasting memories.
